The Importance Of Scripture

Why should we read the Bible?  Why should Scripture be a part of our everyday life? Think about the things you read throughout the day.  News articles, social media posts, and blog posts.  Those things impact us.  It causes you to act a certain way, talk a certain way, and even treat people a certain way.  What we are putting in our minds impacts us.

The Bible is the living and breathing Word of God.  It is active in our lives and holds truth to how we should live.  Here are a few reasons why it’s important to read the Bible.

It reveals God’s character. Throughout Scripture, we see the way God reveals Himself to His people.  His loving, compassionate, gracious character.  When we read stories about God, hear how He spoke, and how He impacted His people- we learn more about His character.

The Bible is useful for everyday life. Life is hard, and sometimes we may question how we are supposed to figure it out.  In Scripture, we find ways to act, ways to treat other people, how we should handle our money, how to handle our enemies, and so many other things.  It’s our ultimate guide to life.

2 Timothy 3:16 says:

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Scripture also helps us combat the devil and the lies of this world.  It warns us of Satan’s strategy to steal, kill, and destroy. By knowing what he is capable of, we can call out the lies and replace them with Truth. When we write Scripture on our hearts, we are ready to replace those lies with who Jesus says we are and continue to speak it out over and over again.

Communicate these points to your students (and many more) of why it is important to create a healthy, consistent habit of reading Scripture.  Present challenges to them to stick with a plan and practice this habit in your weekly gatherings.  There are many resources out there, and Never The Same has you covered!  Grab a Soul Exercises guide or Soul Exercises curriculum pack to help create those healthy Bible reading habits in your large or small groups.  This Bible engagement plan takes you through 6 weeks of content and helps kick-start your daily habit of reading the Bible.
