Everything in our culture points to “me!” I can buy what I want, when I want, look how I want, or appear how I want on social media… When culture shapes our thinking to focus on ourselves, Jesus’ way of living is the opposite. How do we teach a generation to follow in the ways of Jesus in our world today?
Jesus is the perfect example of humility. Philippians 2:3-4 says,
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.”
Fully God and fully man, He came down as one of us to serve and not be served. Why? Our God doesn’t just preach humility but lives it out. He set an example for us to walk in by living a quiet, lowly life. In the end, He even gave up His own life so that we wouldn’t have to pay that price. Now, we can look to His example for how we can serve!
As you desire to teach your teens’ servanthood, know that they also need to see your example! Jesus can work through your life to show your children what putting others first means. Each dinner table conversation, family vacation, or athletic event can be a space where they witness how you treat others. What does your life communicate?
We are all called to follow in Jesus’ footsteps to serve and not be served. As you seek to follow His example, your children will notice and remember those moments. Don’t feel shame or guilt for the times you’ve messed up. We all need help in this area of our lives! But know that even your humility to admit that you have messed up is another example your teens will recall later in their lives.
Here are ideas of ways you can start serving with your teens!
- Go on a short-term mission trip together with your church
- Sign up to volunteer at their game or musical performances
- Wash the dishes with them after a family meal
- Prayerfully give a donation to a charity or ministry you both decide on together
- Leave anonymous notes of encouragement to the teachers at their school
These moments don’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. Practically think of ways you and your teen can pick last in a group, give up the better seat, or help someone in need. As you walk closely to Jesus, they will notice His humility through you!
