Modeling Christlike Character in Everyday Life

The beauty of Jesus’ example of discipleship is how he invited his disciples into his life. They walked together, traveled together, asked questions, ate meals, saw miracles, prayed in secluded places, and experienced loss. Jesus didn’t choose only to preach, He chose to teach by the example of His life.

There is an invitation for us as parents to disciple our children in every moment simply by inviting them into our everyday lives! We don’t have to have a degree from Bible school or a sermon prepped to make a difference in their lives. They are being formed daily by the love and care you show to your family and also to the Lord.

Can you practically invite them into parts of your life where your children can see more of Jesus through you? Here are three helpful steps to take.

1. Be Honest
Your children don’t need a fake you that is polished and perfect, they need the real you! The one who is learning, growing, and seeking to be more like Christ, even when you mess up. There is no perfect parent! But the best parents are the ones who acknowledge their imperfections and grow from them.

There may be powerful moments in your family when you apologize for a wrongdoing or an unintentional mistake. That speaks volumes to your kids! Or you may not know a question your child has about the Bible. Be honest and respond by saying, “I’m not sure! But let me look into that and get back to you. I’d love to talk more!” Show your children how to be lifelong students of the Word, always willing to grow in every season. This kind of honesty from you will create a safe space for your children to be honest.

2. Be Intentional

Discipleship can happen accidentally or on purpose. Pray about ways that you can incorporate the Bible, prayer, church services, service projects, and conversations about Jesus into your regular family rhythms. The value of relationships with God and others can be modeled by your intentionality.

Jesus participated in regular rhythms of prayer. That’s why the disciples asked Him to teach them to pray! What you model and practice will be noticed.

3. Be Gracious

Some of you may read these things and instantly feel guilty or pressure to be the best parent on the planet! Don’t let this article put pressure on you, but encourage you to continue parenting as God has equipped you to. Have grace for yourself while you disciple your kids!
God has enough grace to cover you and your family! Ask Him for continual grace to cover the mistakes you are bound to make and the confidence to humbly repent and move forward! A humble and loving parent is what your child needs. They will see Christ in you as you actively pursue Jesus and invite them into your life!
